Ninety acres of vinifera grapes grow under the watchful eye of the soaring Osprey, our vineyard’s namesake. Our state-of-the-art winery shows our commitment to fine winemaking. Our first vines were planted on 24 acres in Peconic in 1983. An additional 16 acre parcel in Mattituck was purchased and planted in the late 1980’s, but it wasn’t until the early 90’s, when we purchases 50 acres of land and buildings at our present Main road location in Peconic, that we began producing and selling the Osprey brand. In 2012, our entire Richmond Creek second label was introduced to compliment the Osprey line. Although the Long Island wine region is located at approximately the same latitude as the great wine growing regions of France, at Osprey’s Dominion we truly believe our location (being surrounded, yet sheltered, by both the LI Sound and Peconic Bay) and the complexity of the farming soil here, contribute significantly to the quality and character of our grapes, and hence, our wines. Our overall philosophy is to produce the best wines with the least interference from humankind. America's oldest sailmaker Born to a family of sailmakers in Scotland, our founder, William J. Mills, settled in Greenport, NY on the North Fork of Long Island. The area, known for it’s impressive whaling and oyster fleets, was in need of a master sailmaker and thus William J. Mills & Company was born. With the introduction of steam and gasoline powered engines at the turn of the 20th Century, William J Mills recognized that the days of a commercial fleet powered by sails were short lived. Originally known as GNS Contracting Corp., Mr. William Gremler and Mr. Cliff Saunders founded the company in 1974 in order to provide solutions to the growing number of water issues arising on the North Fork of Long Island. In 1996, current owner Mr. John Scaramucci purchased the business, which had expanded its service area to most of Suffolk County and some of Nassau County. GNS's name was changed to GNS/Mermaid Water Systems, with intentions to eventually phase out the “GNS” portion (GNS stands for 'Gremler and Saunders').
