Ninety acres of vinifera grapes grow under the watchful eye of the soaring Osprey, our vineyard’s namesake. Our state-of-the-art winery shows our commitment to fine winemaking.
Our first vines were planted on 24 acres in Peconic in 1983. An additional 16 acre parcel in Mattituck was purchased and planted in the late 1980’s, but it wasn’t until the early 90’s, when we purchases 50 acres of land and buildings at our present Main road location in Peconic, that we began producing and selling the Osprey brand. In 2012, our entire Richmond Creek second label was introduced to compliment the Osprey line.
Although the Long Island wine region is located at approximately the same latitude as the great wine growing regions of France, at Osprey’s Dominion we truly believe our location (being surrounded, yet sheltered, by both the LI Sound and Peconic Bay) and the complexity of the farming soil here, contribute significantly to the quality and character of our grapes, and hence, our wines.
Our overall philosophy is to produce the best wines with the least interference from humankind. We believe that our unique location, soil complexity and Mother Nature give us something different to work with each year, and it is our job and vocation to develop what we’ve been given, into the very best it can be. Our ‘Reserve’ wines are produced only in those years where the right conditions of sun and rain can give us what we need to make a truly great wine. We create our wines to please the most discerning palates.
I came here a few years back to see my buddy perform, Long Island guitarist Bobby Corsetti. Man.. he had this spot rockin'!
While we were here, I had tasted a mulled wine. I actually said out loud, that is really good! I bought a bottle and enjoyed it so much without heating it up.
2019, My wife and I took a ride out east to Ospreys Dominion Vineyard. Osprey is such a beautiful vineyard, there is always music and nice outdoor seating. This particular Sunday in May was too cold to sit outside so we went back inside to enjoy a wine flight and listen to music.
A wine flight allows you to sample the various wines of the vineyard. Ospreys Dominion has award winning wines, one of the flight tasting was a Carmenere. Osprey is Long Island's only producer of Carmenere. It's a very woodsy and spicy wine, the grape originates from Chile.
Our server was very knowledgeable. I like to get these guys talking so I ask him, if its a Chilean wine, should I be tasting minerals like limestone? He said the Carmenere is more earthy and woodsy, you'll taste things like cloves. Wow. Sold.
If you're looking for a nice day at a vineyard, pack a lunch and try the award winning wines being produced at Ospreys Dominion Vineyards.
A casual vineyard that you can bring your lunch to. They have a bunch of picnic tables outside that you can bring food and eat, and drink all their wine. They usually have live music (at least they have the past 3 times I've been there).
The people that work here are amazing. I've never met an unfriendly person there. The bartenders will suggest things based on what you like and ask you the right questions make sure you enjoy it.
